That is the question to us all. Should we care that our campus grounds are filled with trash? From large visible waste (figure 1A) to the tiniest pieces of waste incorporated into the ground (figure 1C), should we be picking this up and putting it into rubbish bins? Ideally, it would never be thrown on the ground in the first place. On litter clean-up day #6, marking our half-year of litter clean-ups at La Trobe, we have not noticed any reduction in litter on campus at all. During our 15-minute litter picking session, 2 rubbish bags were filled with waste, mainly comprising of non-biodegradable plastic (figure 2). This amount of waste was collected in just 15 minutes. Also, one of the litter busters was picking up only cigarette butts and managed to collect 361 butts in this 15-minute session (figure 3). Can you imagine how much could be picked up with 30 people? It’s incredible that all this poisonous waste is being thrown on the ground instead of in bins! If this story has made you disgusted and yet motivated to help clean our campus environment, please join us on our next litter clean-up day this Friday, 25th. We will meet at 4:30 pm at the subway near Thomas Cherry building and venture out for a 15-minute clean-up session. Hope to see you there!
